Community Partners

Truman Smith Children’s Care Center is able to offer such a welcoming place to call home because of the commitment and active participation of our community partners. Below is a description of these organizations and how they help us make this a very specialized place to call home for medically fragile children.

Gladewater Independent School District (ISD)

Our education partnership with Gladewater ISD helps students to use their various senses to aid them in gaining knowledge of their environment. Instruction is offered in three settings that include a Gladewater ISD classroom, a classroom at Truman Smith, or at the bedside.

Taste of the Oil Patch

Taste of the Oil Patch is a non-profit organization that makes a positive difference in the lives of our residents and their loved ones.  Since their inception in 2001, they have raised funds to provide our children with various specialized items such as communication devices, gaming consoles, colorful décor, and much more. The organization raises these funds by hosting two events a year: an Annual Cook Off, held each April, and a Clay Skeet Shoot, held each October.

Motorcycle group fundraiser

Each December, multiple local motorcycle groups host a Community Bike and Toy Drive that delivers presents to the children and families at Truman W. Smith. The children look forward to this event each year with excitement and the support is very much appreciated.

Volunteers

Individuals and organizations in our community provide invaluable support through gifts of time and talent for our residents. Our volunteers do a wide range of activities from greeting visitors to helping produce our “Music Mondays” music therapy program, which is a weekly highlight for so many children and family members. If you are interested in volunteering, contact our Activity Director at (903) 845-2181 or email them at Truman.ACT@nexion-health.com.
